While traveling in Honolulu, Hawaii I had the pleasure of spending some time with Honolulušs finest. Officer Will Cluney of the Honolulu police departments motor division contacted me after a last minute request. I had the opportunity to meet with the officers at a local breakfast stop and was honored by a police escort to Waterfront Park on the island of Oahu for our photo session. It was truly an unique opportunity to observe their pack riding skills as I drove behind them down the streets of Oahu.
The division is made up of officers from different parts of the US, some originating from places like Arkansas to different islands in the Hawaiian island chain. The officers are limited to a 5-year tour of duty on the motorcycle, after that period of time they must return to the squad car. This process is designed to allow other officers the opportunity to ride and seems to be an accepted and fair system. The officers currently ride the BMW RT1100 and commented on some of the special features that motorcycle offers. Some of the features they find exceptional are the ABS brakes and electronic windshields. ABS plays an important role in the Hawaiian Islands where slick road conditions are the norm. This due to the consistent rain they get on a daily basis. The electronic windshield is a bonus allowing the airflow direction to be regulated on those balmy Hawaiian sun filled days.
We arrived at Waterfront Park to meet with a steady rain shower. After about 15 minutes the rain had stopped and we had perfect lighting conditions with the sun overhead. Please take a moment to look through the photos; I feel they came out exceptionally well! Hawaii is one of my favorite places to be and being a motor officer in paradise seems to me to be pretty nice detail. Thanks again to Will Cluney and his motor officer colleagues, I appreciate the fact that they took time out of their day to meet with me and allowed me to create this submission to the site.
